I wasn’t aware of this. I am still a student (for Game Design) and I always thought, that I don’t have to deal with sexism until I start working, but I was wrong. 50% of the students in my study path are female and yet we still get more critique for our work, when we work in project groups with only women instead of working in a mixed or completely male group.
And this is not about how sexist ‘male’ commentators are. Even the females in my study path aren’t willing to give us the same feedback like they give to the ‘mixed’ groups. In my ‘only women’ project group we worked really hard for our progress, but instead of giving us fair and constructive criticism, like the other groups got before, the jury (2 women, 3 men) of our interim presentation just focused on our art style (environment, concept art and stuff), searching for the weak spots in our concepts and cooking up some real shit like:
'Your desert concepts are not realistic enought. The houses there should look more destroyed, because of the rain.'
EXUSE ME? RAIN?! IN THE FUCKING DESERT?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?
They said NOTHING about the gameplay (we talked about the mechanics we used and showed a gameplay video to them), like if they like it or not or even that they need to play it to give some true feedback for this. Nothing. The did just not care…
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. They even dared to give our programer a compliment for looking good, but saying nothing, while two of our group did the presentation. It’s like: Oh, wow, you are a female programer and did the whole game implementation of the mechanics and stuff by yourself? Thats cute, but I think it’s more important, that you look good on a stage. WHAT?! I was so NOT prepared for that, that I thought at first it was a joke and laughed about this comment…
At the end of the presentation and the feedback I just realized what happened… Our lecturers came to our group, raging obout the sexist comments of the jury members and that they will feel the consequences later for their behaviour. They told us we did a good job and that they will give us real feedback later and even other students came to us and told us, we didn’t deserve this kind of feedback we got from the jury. I am really happy, that our work was not completly crushed. We GOT some helpful critique to make our game project better after all, but it was kinda awakening to see how some people react to women in the gaming industry…
Ooooh, I am so going to kick some asses later… Now I am awake and aware of this kind of shit. But what can I do about it? I want to change things and punch sexism in the face!
